Rustenburg (translated as 'place of rest') was founded in 1851 and has grown from a small farming community, producing citrus and tobacco, to the 'Platinum Capital' of the world.
Some of the largest platinum mines in the world are situated around Rustenburg. Although mainly platinum is mined, other minerals such as chrome, lead and granite are also commercially exploited.
Rustenburg is surrounded by the Magaliesberg mountain range, which is older than Mount Everest, and has a wonderfully warm climate, even in the winter. The area boasts a typical bushveld topography which also makes it an excellent hunting destination.
Many Anglo-Boer War and ethnic battles took place in the area, featuring prominent battle-fields and memorial graves. The area is also an archaeologist's dream with many exploration sites dating back from the iron and stone ages.
